Arched Desk - hidden detail The two main features of this design are the arch and the long joint between the top & sides. The desk holds five drawers. The joint is just as it looks - two parts, one being the exact opposite to the other, both cut into the ends of their respective panels. After glueng the top & sides together, the desk is placed upsidedown on the bench and the internal carcass structure is filled in. Although the desk top & sides are made from solid oak 30mm thick, there is still some flexibility. The arch is not structurally complete so does not provide the stability that it would visually seem to. It's lower sections are made of solid oak shaped into a curve, but the upper part is for visual effect and exists only on the front/rear surfaces of the drawers/back-panel, consequently not interfering with the drawer runners. Stability in the design of the desk is created by inserting a beam at the back (close-up No.1) and under-drawer rails across the front (close-up No.2), the use of dovetails makes this a very strong structure. |
